The Real Film Festival is heading to Port Stephens for the first time this year, and a special screening is taking place at the legendary Scotty’s Cinema in East Raymond Terrace!  Enjoy a range of locally made films dealing with themes of loss, remembrance, tragedy and celebration.

Commencing at 5pm will be Aunty Margo, which follows a Worimi Elder and as she recounts her connection to the Stolen Generation.  This deeply emotional story of reconnecting with family is one that is sure to touch the hearts of audiences.

Following this is a screening of I Walk, I Run, I Drum from local filmmaker Dave Hukka that celebrates culture and community.  The event of the same name is an annual event held in Port Stephens, which encourages people to embrace the deep connection between rhythm and the environment.

Further exploring personal relationships with the environment is The Burning Mountain, which investigates a naturally burning coal seam located in the upper Hunter Valley.  The result is a geological phenomenon that has left a lasting impact on the community of Wingen.

Next on the program is Beyond the Red Zone – an investigation into the lives of those effected by the Williamtown contamination.  50 people in to ‘The Red Zone’ have been diagnosed with cancer in recent years, which may be linked to the chemicals within their water.  Since the story broke in 2015, the residents have been wondering what comes next in terms of rehabilitation and compensation for their lives and the land.

The final film is Angels Gather Here, which follows one woman’s journey back to her hometown as she faces her past.  From local filmmaker Ian Hamilton, this film provides a unique insight into the lives on one Aboriginal family over five generations.  It tells a tale of strength, dignity and resilience in the face of adversity.

Following the film screenings we invite you to join us for an exclusive Q&A session with the filmmakers and lead talent form each film.
