Join us Friday, November 29th at Maitland Gaol for an Outdoor Cinema Event, screening short film ‘Execution Island,’ (filmed at the Gaol) and heart-stopping feature film ‘Sanctuary.’
Gates open at 6:30pm for guests to enjoy a complimentary drink from our sponsors and food from the carts, before settling down to watch some incredible, and moving Australian made films.
Short film ‘Execution Island,’ which was filmed at Maitland Gaol, follows the story of “two young Australians convicted of drug smuggling in Indonesia in 2006. Sentenced to death by firing squad, during their 9 years in prison, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan were rehabilitated and began many positive activities within the prison. Myuran became an accomplished artist, while Andrew became an ordained Minister and established a church inside the prison. Rev Christie Buckingham was Myuran’s spiritual advisor. This is her eye wittness account of a night that will never be forgotten.”
Following short ‘Execution Island,’ feature film ‘Sanctuary’ will also be screened in the presence of its makers.
“Khaled fought against the “beast” of terror when working as an interpreter for the Coalition Forces in Iraq. Born Iraqi but raised in the Netherlands he believes in Western ideals of freedom like any Dutchman. But Khaled couldn’t escape the legacy of violence and spends the next 10 years travelling across 4 continents in search of safety. In the age of terror, Khaled is someone to be feared and is treated inhumanely. In 2015 he documents his quest to return home. Will he find sanctuary and have the life he always deserved or will he finally crack and become the beast they all fear him to be?”
Q&A’s with Sanctuary Director Kaye Harrison and Founder of Zara’s House Refugee Centre Sister Di Santleben together with Execution Island Director Jamie Humphries and actors Cathy Burnside & Andrew Yang will follow.
