2017 Real Film Festival returns for another year
We are very excited to announce the Real Film Festival (RFF) will soon be returning to Newcastle screens for its 6th year and is looking bigger and better than ever. This year the festival will run on October 27-29 in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. The festival focuses on real people and real stories in this un’real’ region of ours.
The art of storytelling real events through film will be celebrated over three exciting days. The festival weekend puts Newcastle up in lights, whilst highlighting the pool of creative talent that flows through the city.
We kick of the festival with 12 film workshops on Friday October 27 at the Hunter Street TAFE from 9am to 4pm, so if you’d like to know more about how to make a film, build a game or how to get more out of your YouTube account and start making money, check out our list of workshops on the realfilmfestival.com.au website. On Saturday we are running two masterclasses ‘Camera Obscura’ with the worlds 1st film breaker – Jason van Genderen and then we move on to ‘commercialising your film / business/ individual passion in an online world, with Louise van Rooyen and Rebecca Boyle. A great opportunity to find out how you can sell yourself better (and make money) in an online world.
My focus this year is on ‘locals’. All the films have been chosen because they are either produced locally or their subject would resonate with the local audience.
This year we are screening two Advance Screenings which has been a coup for the festival. You can get along to see ‘Jungle’ on opening night just after our Official Launch at the White Room (above Endota Spa, King Street Newcastle). The film introduces a mysterious guide who escorts an enthusiastic adventurer and his friend into the Amazon jungle. Their journey turns into a terrifying ordeal as the darkest elements of human nature and the deadliest threats of the wild force them to fight for survival. It really is a harrowing adventure. After the film screening at the Tower Cinema (short walk from the White Room) we will have the festival Opening Party at Silo in Honeysuckle. If you feel like meeting a few local, national and international film makers, join us at the opening party.
The second ‘Advanced Screening’ is ‘Only the Brave’ which is the most emotional film I have ever watched! And I watch a lot of films …… All men are created equal… then, a few become firefighters. Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, is the heroic story of one unit of local firefighters that through hope, determination, sacrifice, and the drive to protect families, communities, and our country become one of the most elite firefighting teams in the country. As most of us run from danger, they run toward it, they watch over our lives, our homes, everything we hold dear, as they forge a unique bond that comes into focus with one fateful fire.
The program is brimming with a variety of entertainment for everyone so check us out at www.realfilmfestival.com.au or email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
This year we are heading to Speers Point Park in Lake Macquarie to hold our free outdoor cinema event, so grab your family and friends and head over for a great night of family fun. WReal Film Festival programe have organised kids games, jumping castle, face painting plus lots of giveaways, food, music and a BBQ with our charitable partner Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. A fab and free night out for the whole family from 5.30pm on Saturday 28th October.
The festival will culminate on Sunday night with the announcement of the short film competition winners, ahead of the screening of local filmmaker Ian Hamilton’s film ‘Angels Gather Here’. This film symbolises the strength, dignity and resilience of many Aboriginal people in the face of adversity.
After most of this years film screenings, we are running Q&A sessions with the filmmakers so you can ask the filmmakers or cast your questions or you can let them know how the film affected you.
We hope you enjoy the festival!
